Weekly Bookish Question #343 (June 25th - July 1st)

Would you consider it a spoiler to know that there is a big plot twist in a book? Would you be more or less interested in reading it if you knew about it in advance?

This one’s tough because I like plot twists when they’re well done, so I’d be excited that there was one, but I’d probably focus so much on trying to figure out the twist that it would ruin my reading experience.

In this novella set in an imperial Chinese inspired fantasy world, a nonbinary cleric investigates the story of an empress and her …controversial rise to the throne, as told by an elderly handmaiden who knew her.

The One with a Retired Warhorse

A disgraced, disabled princess teaches herself to ride and fight, then takes on a dragon, an evil wizard, and a demon army with the help of a retired warhorse and a pack of giant cats and dogs.

Which would you rather read?

The One with the Nonbinary Cleric

The One with a Retired Warhorse

Moira’s Pen up to the last two stories: a good mix of old content and new, with some reveals and twists and surprises and general excitement or emotions moments but nothing that kept me from recovering an even keel

Book Discussion

for my audiobook listeners, which books were improved by their audio versions? the ones that come to mind for me are daughter of smoke and bone by laini taylor and shadowshaper by daniel jose older. khristine hvam and anika noni rose are splendid narrators!

I don’t experience many books through both the physical and audio versions, but I do listen to a lot of audiobooks. The success of an audiobook is so dependent on the narrator.

I generally know that I’m in for a good time if a book is narrated by Kate Rudd (Truly Devious), Kristen Sieh (Funny You Should Ask), Brittany Pressley (American Royals, Oona Out of Order), or Julia Whelan (Emily Henry, Taylor Jenkins Reid, and most other bestselling books).

Kevin Free does an amazing job with the Murderbot books.

Pretty sure I wouldn’t have made it through all of the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series if it weren’t for the narrator, Kristin Atherton.
